MUDDY WATERS - SHE MOVES ME
the slide in this song, little walter’s harmonica, it’s too much man, too many feelings, this song has got more soul than the devil…
The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset (live at the BBC)
What’s the difference between a drummer and a trunk full of dead kittens? Yea, I’m not sure either but it certainly isn’t the smell. However this didn’t stop the Kinks from permitting Mick Avory in to BBC Piccadilly Studio 1, July 1st, 1968, and it’s lucky for us.
This somewhat abbreviated version of Waterloo Sunset is noticeably more rockin’, garage-alike if you will, than the original that appears on 1967’s Something Else By The Kinks. This is due, in large part, to the prominence of the drums which were downplayed on the proper Pye Studio recording. Nicky Hopkins’ welcome new piano passage, a rougher guitar tone, and a loose take also add to the edge. So the next time you’re asked what you call someone that hangs around with musicians - please resist the obvious answer, and think of our man Avory and how he’s enhanced this song.

James Jamerson. Graham Parker also did a great version of this.
